When you have a rental property in Washington, D.C., you need to make sure you have a business license. The D.C. government requires a business licenses for rental properties for two main reasons: to make sure the property qualifies as a rental property and to make sure they know how much to charge you in taxes.
To get a business license, you first need to register your property as exempt from or under rent control. You can do that at the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. It’s also known as DCRA. You will also be required to get a unique tax ID from the District government. With these things in place, you can apply for a business license online or at DCRA. There are fees required, and you’ll need to pay for those with your application.
As soon as you apply, your next step is to schedule a time for your property to be inspected by a DCRA inspector. They have certain requirements they are looking for, and you can find those online, or we can provide them for you.
